How Much Water Should My Hamster Drink?

Water is an important part of a hamster’s diet and should be available at all times. You may use a gravity-flow bottle, placed at an acceptable height, where the hamster is comfortable reaching to. Water should be changed daily to ensure that algae do not form in your hamster’s water bottle.

Water is an important part of a hamster’s diet and should be available at all times. You may use a gravity-flow bottle, placed at an acceptable height, where the hamster is comfortable reaching to. Water should be changed daily to ensure that algae do not form in your hamster’s water bottle.

According to this website, a hamster requires constant access to water. Water can be provided in a dish or in a water bottle. A water bottle is best as a hamster will often kick wood shavings into a dish or may knock it over. Water bottles with ball-bearings in the tube tend to be better than those without.

If a dish is used to provide water this should be ceramic or metal as plastic dishes are easily chewed by hamsters. The dish used should also be at least 1 1/2 inch tall and filled about halfway with water.

Hamsters require constant access to water, but may not necessarily drink a lot. However, if you have observed your hamster not consuming any water within 1-2 days, you should consult a vet.
