What are puppy mills?
Puppy mills are large-scale dog breeding facilities where dogs are bred to be sold to the public through pet shops, newspaper ads, or even forums. Most of the time, puppy mill dogs are confined to small and crowded cages, and are housed in unsanitary conditions. And since their main goal is to churn out as many puppies as they can, inbreeding is common practice, resulting in many dogs with inferior health and genes.

Reasons to adopt
Some shelter dogs come from the streets, while others were surrendered by owners who cannot–or no longer want to–care for them. Not only does adoption save the life of the dog that you’re adopting, but it will also make room for the new animal that the shelter takes in. Shelter space is limited, and often, dogs that cannot find a shelter to await adoption are put to sleep.

Plus, contrary to popular belief, many shelter dogs are actually healthy and good-natured, and are just looking for a place to call home. The most common reasons why a dog is given up is due to a changes in the family and/or household: It could be a divorce, a move,or a new baby. It could even be a case of the owners being overwhelmed by the huge responsibility of owning a dog. Adopting these pooches will give them a second chance to be part of a family again.

When it comes to the temperament of most shelter dogs, there is no need for guessing. This is because their fosterers and the shelter volunteers would have already interacted with them a fair bit. They are also usually already adults, with matured personalities that are unlikely to change much. Through screening, staff at the shelter can help you to find a dog that fits into your family and lifestyle. They would know things like which of their pooches are good with babies and toddlers, are active or more sedentary, independent, or just need lots of love.

Where do I start?
