World’s Ugliest Dog 2019 Crowned

What does it take to win the World Ugliest Dog title? Well, like any beauty contest, it takes a lot more than just beauty and brains - there’s also hair and nails, and maybe a little tongue action.

Scamp the Tramp, the World's Ugliest Dog 2019, was apparently found and rescued one hour before he was due to be put to sleep in Los Angeles, and has spent the last seven years working as a pet therapist, helping children and seniors feel better about life. What was the winning combination, we wonder, that set the hearts of voters aflutter? What's he got that the other really ugly dogs don't?

Scamp is a Rastafarian dog, according to his bio.

 

Maybe it is that Scamp has all the winning traits of all the previous Ugliest Dogs: unruly, ungroomable fur that points in all different directions, a lolling/lopsided tongue, a pair of “crazy-eyes”, and senior citizen status. Sure, the other doggies had some of those undesirable desirable features, but only Scamp had them all. He was the total package.

Now the idea behind such a contest may all seem a bit mean, but rest assured, there’s loads of good intentions behind this annual not-beauty contest. The organizers, Sonoma Marin Fair hope to draw attention to the plight of all rescue animals, and it surely helps that the 19 fugly contenders all have loving homes, and are living large, rich and meaningful lives despite their lack of fortune in the looks department.

According to the organizers of the contest, “For nearly 30 years, the World’s Ugliest Dog® Contest has been a testament that the pedigree does not define the pet. Dogs of all breeds and sizes have warmed our hearts and filled our lives with unconditional love. This world-renowned event celebrates the imperfections that make all dogs special and unique.”

Maybe a similar contest should be organized for our Singapore Specials?
