Cat-hartic Tunes
If you’ve ever found yourself trying to share your top 40 playlist with Puss, only to be snubbed, don’t worry – it’s normal. Felines have superior audio abilities, hearing up to 1.6 octaves higher than humans! With such sensitive ears, it’s understandable that they dislike when Meghan Trainer raps about “that bass”.
So is there anything that Puss likes listening to?
Well, researchers at University of Wisconsin-Madison have announced that they’ve successfully found a tune that makes cats go gaga. Leader of the study, Psychology professor Charles Snowdon explained, "We are not actually replicating cat sounds. We are trying to create music with a pitch and tempo that appeal to cats." The music is composed by David Teie (University of Maryland), and uses the rhythmic tempo of purring. It is also set one octave higher than the human voice to stimulate them. When it reached the cats’ ears, they actually began purring and rubbing their bodies against the speakers in delight!
Besides being useful for lazy weekend cuddle sessions with Puss, this breakthrough could be useful for calming down distressed felines in rescue facilities, catteries and zoos.
