Four-Legged Helpers
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’d most certainly have heard about the recent fiasco involving guide dog team Cassandra and Esme. While the incident has inevitably split people into two camps, the fact remains that many are still ignorant about guide dogs and the laws surrounding their presence in public spaces. Here’s what you need to know about these furry helpers:
Guide dogs are allowed in dining establishments
The Environmental Public Health Act states that guide dogs may be allowed into all areas of food establishments, including the toilet and dining areas, as long as they are well-behaved, not causing any nuisance, and are leashed.
Riding with Fido
According to the Rapid Transit Systems Regulations, no pet animals or any livestock may be brought onto MRT trains and stations. However, guide dogs accompanying visually handicapped people are the exception.
Guide dogs are not prohibited entry into halal restaurants
Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (MUIS) has said that there are no laws stopping guide dogs from entering halal restaurants. Due to anticipated concerns, they have come up with a set of guidelines to help reduce any conflicts (see here). The decision, however, remains up to the discretion of the individual shop owners.
Guide dogs are not just pets
Many people view guide dogs as pet dogs that just happen to help the blind with their day-to-day tasks. However, these canines are working dogs that have been born, bred and trained to carry out the specific task of guiding their partners to safety. The fact that they’re fluffy and adorable is just a bonus!
Guide dog-friendly establishments
Currently, there are more than 30 establishments, including hospitals, shopping malls, and businesses, that have pledged to support the cause. A big thumbs-up for these understanding businesses that’ve come forward! For the full list, see here.
So there you have it! Let’s continue working towards making Singapore a more gracious, caring and thoughtful society for everyone. For more information on the guide dog scene in Singapore, visit Guide Dog Association of the Blind’s website here.
